Fuel Services

Since the decade of the 1980s, Enusa has developed the area of fuel services because of its special concern with the need to carefully and directly track the performance of fuel in operation. The portfolio of Enusa services basically covers the following areas: handling of fresh and irradiated fuel, detection of fuel leaks through visual fuel inspection and also ultrasound and sipping techniques, fuel repair, ultrasound cleaning, and fuel inspection and characterization.

The purpose of the first services provided was to verify the fuel performance by inspections and measurements of the most representative characteristics. To this end, Enusa and Tecnatom jointly developed the Sicom equipment, which is still used today in the nuclear power plants with some upgrades and innovations.

In the early 1990s, the company began to provide fuel leak inspection and fuel repair services, mostly with the equipment developed for this purpose by its partners Westinghouse and General Electric.

In the middle of that decade, Enusa founded the subsidiary Enusa-ENWESA AIE, which works with PWR, fuel and in which ENWESA Operaciones and Westinghouse Technology Services (WTS) have a share as partners. GENUSA has also developed specific services for BWR fuel.

In recent years, Enusa has been undertaking campaigns in practically all the Spanish plants, in European Union plants where it supplies fuel, and on other continents with campaigns in the Angra (Brazil) and Maanshan (Taiwan) power plants. In addition, in 2007 the company signed an agreement with Tecnatom to provide services in China, an emerging market to which the company could export its experience, technology and know-how.
