Since 2003, Enusa Industrias Avanzadas S.A. has worked on the development of new energy applications in two fields:
- Biological-mechanical treatment of urban solid waste (USW): Enusa, through its subsidiary TECONMA,
has been awarded the bid for the Zonal Waste Plan of Zone I (Castellón), where the reuse and recycling of waste is proposed.
This treatment consists of subjecting the urban solid waste to a biological stabilization and drying process in order to degrade the organic matter contained in it. The resulting materials can then be treated, used or handled under more efficient, healthier conditions.
Because of the temperatures reached during the process, the water contained in the waste evaporates and so the volume of waste is also reduced by 25 or 30%.
The biological-mechanical treatment is done in five phases: reception of the urban solid waste, crushing, stabilization and drying, treatment of the resulting emissions (water vapor and CO2) and, finally, pressing or refining of the resulting fraction.

- Carbon dioxide (CO2): Enusa Industrias Avanzadas also participates in work groups of the “Spanish CO2 Technology Platform”, created in 2006 on the initiative of the Ministry of Industry in order to coordinate the collaboration of multiple Spanish organizations and enterprises in CO2 treatment programs. Enusa’s cooperation focuses on the areas of storage and transport of this gas.
