Saelices el Chico Environmental Center (Salamanca)

Centro Medioambiental de Saelices el Chico – Ciudad Rodrigo is currently reclaiming the former uranium mines (Mines Fe and D) in order to recover the affected natural space and try to return it to its original state, with environmental and radiological conditions as similar as possible to the original situation.

All the decommissioning is being carried out in accordance with the projects approved by the competent authorities: Consejo de Seguridad Nuclear, Mine Division and Territorial Environment Service of the Junta de Castilla y León, etc.

This project is co-funded by Enusa and ENRESA and has a budget of some 78 million euros.

The work began in 2001 and is due to be completed in 2010. Afterwards, a monitoring and control program will be enforced for an initial period of 5 years, i.e. up to 2015.

The Quercus treatment plant will remain in its current situation, pending evolution of the uranium concentrate prices, until the decision is made to use or dismantle it. .
