Environmental policy

The Enusa Management, fully aware of the environmental commitment involved in managing a nuclear facility,

Declares the importance it attaches to:

  1. The safety of the population, our surroundings, the workers and the Factory assets.

  2. The trust that society has placed in us via the operating license granted by the authorities to the Juzbado Factory.

  3. The active participation of everyone as a basis for fulfilling the environmental commitments assumed by the Factory via the implemented Environmental Management System, with a view to achieving sustainable development as demanded by society.

  4. Transparency and communication as essential values of the Factory’s environmental performance.

  5. The task of managers and officers in relation to the Environmental Policy of the facility; they will act as leaders by demonstrating their commitment with examples, messages and supervision.

  6. Managerial performance, whose primary course of action is to encourage and strengthen a strong, positive environmental culture throughout the organization.

To achieve these objectives, the Management takes the following actions:

  1. Operate in accordance with applicable environmental legislation and regulations enforced at the community, national, autonomous and local levels, as well as the provisions of the current Provisional Operating License and the corresponding uranium oxide fuel assembly Manufacturing License of the Juzbado Factory.

  2. Give priority to the actions aimed at eliminating, or at least minimizing as much as possible, the environmental impact caused by the productive process. These actions will be subordinate only to the actions aimed at guaranteeing Nuclear Safety and Radiological Protection, in that order.

  3. Promote continuous improvement of the Factory’s environmental performance, as well as the prevention of contamination, and closely collaborate with local, regional and national authorities with a view to conducting our business on a sustainable basis.

  4. Develop new activities on an environmentally friendly basis, ensuring environmental protection and conservation, and extending the existing rigorous control of solid radioactive wastes and radioactive emissions and discharges to other environmental aspects, e.g. atmospheric gas emissions, conventional waste generation, treatment and management and, in particular, the hazardous radioactive wastes (oils, hydrocarbons, etc.) and discharges to the Tormes River.

  5. Conserve resources and energy by reasonable continuous improvement of the facility’s overall performance and of energy efficiency.

  6. Assume a commitment to continuous improvement and prevention of contamination by maintaining an Environmental Management System that entails the periodic evaluation of the environmental effects of Juzbado Factory products, processes and services and an annual review of environmental targets and goals with a view to minimizing the environmental impacts of the facility, using for this purpose the best available technologies when technically and economically viable.

  7. Communicate the Environmental Policy to all employees and contractors of the Juzbado Factory, train and raise the awareness of workers, clearly assign responsibilities and extend the requirements to the contractors that carry out activities in the facility, and also make this Environmental Policy available to the public.

  8. Make the validated Environmental Declaration available to the public and other stakeholders.

  9. Collaborate with the public Administration and competent organizations in this field to protect and conserve the environment.
