Our History

Beginnings>

ENUSA was incorporated in 1972 as Empresa Nacional del Uranio S.A. with the original aim of prospecting and investigating the uranium deposits existing in Spain for concentrate production. To this end, the State transferred to us the exploitation of the uranium mines located in Saelices el Chico (Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca) and La Haba (Don Benito, Badajoz), which were put into operation some years later.

In parallel and in order to promote this business, we created EURODIF in 1973 (together with enterprises from France, Italy and Belgium) to build the uranium enrichment plant in Tricastin (France).

In 1975, ENUSA entered into a collaboration agreement with the French company Cogema, the Japanese company OURD and the State of Niger to set up a uranium concentrate production mining company (COMINAK) in the Republic of Niger.

During those years, we also signed the first enriched uranium supply contracts with the Spanish electric utilities that owned the nuclear power plants and a series of licensing agreements with WESTINGHOUSE and GENERAL ELECTRIC.

In 1979, by legal mandate, ENUSA began to manage the basic uranium stock, inventories that assure Spain’s energy supply.

Growth>

In 1981, after obtaining the corresponding licenses, we started the construction of the fuel assembly factory in Juzbado, Salamanca. Four years later – in 1985 – it was fully operational. Our first fuel supply was shipped to the Spanish Ascó nuclear power plant.

In 1988, ENUSA obtained its first contract to supply fuel assemblies abroad, specifically for the Swiss Leibstadt nuclear power plant. We thus launched our foreign business line, which has increasingly gained in importance because of the problems posed by the nuclear moratorium to business growth and expansion in Spain.

One year later – in 1989 – we signed an agreement with GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. to jointly operate in the European BWR nuclear fuel market.

Between 1991 and 1993, we built the Quercus Plant in Saelices el Chico for production of uranium concentrates. This plant ceased operations in 2000. Previously, in 1990, operations ceased at the deposit of La Haba. Environmental reclamation works began at both sites. For this reason, in 1997 we decided to create the ENUSA Environmental Project Management, today called the Technical Environmental Office, which is in charge of managing the decommissioning and reclamation works at the Badajoz Mining Center and providing support to the Saelices Chico Center.

Expansion>

ENUSA’s expansion stage during the decade of the 1990s was the result of new commercial alliances and a corporate diversification policy. For instance, in 1991, ENUSA, Westinghouse Electric Corporation and British Nuclear Fuels Plc. set up the European Fuel Group in order to operate jointly on the European PWR nuclear fuel market.

Another partnership that we signed in 1995 was the ENUSA – ENWESA Economic Interest Association with WESTINGHOUSE and ENWESA-OPERACIONES S.A., the aim of which was to provide nuclear fuel-related services.

In 1996, ENUSA and GENERAL ELECTRIC NUCLEAR ENERGY created the company called GE ENUSA Nuclear Fuel S.A. (GENUSA) to operate in the European BWR nuclear fuel supply market.

In the early 1990s, ENUSA implemented a corporate diversification policy in order to take advantage of our technological and human resources potential in new lines of business more or less linked to the nuclear sector and the environmental area. We also acquired other companies and thus the ENUSA GROUP was born. Today this GROUP is formed by EXPRESS TRUCK S.A.U. (ETSA), which transports hazardous and special merchandise, and EMPRESA PARA LA GESTIÓN DE RESIDUOS INDUSTRIALES S.A., S.M.E., M.P. (EMGRISA), in charge of managing industrial wastes and treating contaminated soil and water.

In the environmental field, ENUSA itself, through our Technical Environmental Office, undertakes activities focusing on the management and treatment of municipal solid wastes (MSW) and agro-animal and agro-industrial wastes. In 2011, we started up a biogas plant in Juzbado and another MSW management plant in Castellón.

Internationalization and New Lines of Business>

In recent years, ENUSA has achieved the international recognition of our clients, thanks to our commitment to quality and to excellence in management. A high percentage of our production is intended for export to Europe.

In 2006, we entered into a Joint Venture (UTE) with WESTINGHOSUE and TECNATOM to provide refueling services to the Ascó I and II and Vandellós II power plants. One year later, we created the SPANISH NUCLEAR GROUP FOR COOPERATION together with ENSA, Tecnatom and Ringo Válvulas which focuses on development of the Chinese nuclear market and other international markets in growth-oriented.

The four partners undertake promotional activities on a coordinated basis via the SNGC Group and at the same time we each individually continue to conduct our business activities. All this has been an important step for ENUSA in our internationalization process, which has resulted in the signature of several cooperation agreements with Chinese, Brazilian, Argentine and with the objective of identifying areas of potential development in the activities of the nuclear fuel cycle. We have recently collaborated with Tecnatom in the supply of a passive scanner advanced factory in Resende operated by Industrias nuclear do Brazil.

Our subsidiary EMGRISA is also in the midst of an internalization process, having registered the EMGRISA brand in Chile and Peru. In addition, the Thermal Desorption plant is taking part in a project for treatment and decontamination of soil contaminated with hydrocarbons in Kuwait.
