The work day has allowed the CSN delegation to learn on site the progress of the environmental recovery project of the Saelices el Chico uranium mine and visit the Juzbado fuel elements factory.

At this meeting, topics of common interest were addressed in the fields of nuclear fuel, mining activities, engineering and dismantling and management of radioactive waste developed by ENUSA.

A delegation from the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN), headed by its president Josep Maria Serena i Sender; the councilors Javier Díes, Francisco Castejón, Elvira Romera and Pilar Lucio; as well as the general secretary, Manuel Rodríguez, among other members, traveled this week to Salamanca to hold the meeting of the Liaison Committee with ENUSA.

The members of the regulatory body were received upon arrival by the president of ENUSA, José Vicente Berlanga, and the Corporate Director, Rosario Arévalo, who were accompanied by the Director of Industrial Operations, Pedro Álvarez, and the Director of Business Development, Roberto González; the technical directors of Dismantling and Services in Central, of the Juzbado Factory and of Engineering, Manuel Quecedo, Pablo Vega and Antonino Romano, respectively, and the director of the Saelices center, Ignacio Vecillas.

This meeting, which is part of the program of institutional visits that the CSN Plenary has carried out since its appointment, began yesterday with a visit to the ENUSA center in Saelices el Chico, where a general tour of the old mining operations (closed in the year 2000) with the aim of checking on the ground the progress in their restoration. In this regard, special attention has been paid to the TEKURA project for the application of technosols for the recovery of the soil cover and the reduction in the generation of acidic waters.

The CSN delegation has also been able to see the facilities of the Natural Radioactivity Laboratory located in these facilities and intended for the study and training activities of everything related to the generation and emanation of radon, through a collaboration agreement with the University of Cantabria . Subsequently, they visited the facilities associated with the Quercus concentrate manufacturing plant, whose administrative authorization to proceed with its dismantling and closure is currently being processed.

The second day of work took place this morning at the fuel factory that ENUSA owns in the town of Juzbado, where both delegations held the meeting of their Liaison Committee. As usual, the main topics of common interest in the areas of Nuclear Fuel have been reviewed; Mining Activities; Engineering; and Decommissioning and Management of Radioactive Waste developed by ENUSA.

Regarding the mining activities carried out by ENUSA, the director of the Saelices center, Ignacio Vecillas, has explained the current situation of the Saelices el Chico (Salamanca) and La Haba (Badajoz) sites.

Following the day's agenda, ENUSA presented the main activities carried out at the Juzbado factory, at which time its director, Pablo Vega, explained the status of the facility's licensing activities and the new internal personnel dosimetry project. .

On the other hand, within the Engineering area, Antonino Romano, technical director responsible for these skills, has transferred the main activities that are being undertaken in terms of R&D&i.

Finally, regarding the area of Decommissioning and Management of Radioactive Waste, its technical director, Manuel Quecedo, explained the status of relevant projects for ENUSA such as the new Technology and Equipment Maintenance Center.

Within the program of activities for this visit, the CSN delegation visited the Ceramic and Mechanical manufacturing areas of the facility.

At its conclusion, the president of ENUSA expressed “our satisfaction at having the presence, for the first time, at our facilities in Saelices and Juzbado of the president of the CSN and the competent advisors in the areas of common work. Without a doubt, seeing on the ground the projects that concern both organizations helps us understand and work with greater knowledge and judgment.”

The liaison committees constitute the instrument of institutional cooperation of the CSN at the highest level, with the main associations or companies, whose activities are subject to licensing and control by the regulatory body.
